Dear Shank Family, My heart is sad with the passing of Gloria. She was an amazing influence and force in our lives growing up. Ten years ago at my mother’s funeral, Gloria pulled me aside and lovingly gave me these words of comfort and advice, “Oh honey, you need to get yourself some Tucks, lay down, and put them on your eyes.” My eyes were so red and puffed up from crying. She was right, they worked. Gloria was a beautiful person. I know you all will miss her. I miss all of you and am thinking of you. May God bless you. Love Mary White

I knew Gloria thru her daughter, Barb Shurina, and her grandchildren, Sam & Ben.
Gloria was always referred to as “a fire-ball” … active, funny, vivacious, loving.
Sam & Ben once told me that Gloria purchased a family burial plot and announced that the site would be used on a “First-come, First-serve” basis. I think she was able to joke about dying, because she wasn’t afraid of the future. And, because she was living to the fullest in the present.
Although Gloria’s death came quickly and unexpectedly … maybe that is how she would have wanted it. I believe that she lived her life with zest and style – with no regrets – That in itself is a remarkable thing.
If the afterlife is as wonderful as I suspect, then I am sure Gloria is shopping at the best stores in Heaven … and buying lots of shoes.

Shank Family:
So sorry to hear about Gloria’s passing. I remember the good times of hanging out at the 46th St house & playing on the trampoline next door! Your family, especially Bernie & Barb, were so dear to my parents, and with my dad’s passing this September, I feel your pain & sorrow of losing your mother/wife.
God Bless you, as we’ll keep you in our prayers.
Sincerely,
Dr Brett Zimpfer says
To The Entire Family –
We will truly miss Gloria’s big smile, her witty candor, and the way she made everyone feel included in her conversation with her gift of gab. She was always the one to light up any room, and whenever she was on the schedule, the staff would fight over who had the privelege of treating her. We feel for you loss, and we know heaven has another big voice to entertain the angels ! Bless you all –
Dr. Zimpfer and Staff

Dear Bernie, John, Mike, Pam, Barb, and Suzie,
I was so sorry to hear that Gloria had passed away. She was such an important person in our lives as we were growing up. If we ever needed anything we knew where to go and who to see! She was always there for us when we needed her and she was always our back up plan in many a family emergency as we were growing up. One of the warmest and most welcoming women–ever! I can’t imagine how much of all of you are going to miss her. She was one of a kind!

Bernie and kids,
I just learned yesterday of Gloria’s passing. She was an amazing woman who enjoyed and affirmed other people so much. The home that she created for her children and the neighborhood kids was very welcoming. It was like a second home for me and she was like a second mother to me. She will always be a major part of my childhood memories and will always live on in my heart. And thank you, too, Bernie, for teaching me how to ride a bicycle on the St. Thomas playground, and teaching me how to dive in Albershardt’s pool. You and Gloria were a great team. I know her loss is immeasurable for you, and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you in these dark days.
Julie Steichen McGinty says
Dear Bernie and family,
While the years have flown by since I was the “big sister” in the neighborhood, I have never forgotten the Shank family. Gloria was one of those unforgettable people in my life- full of joy and energy- a wonderful mother and wife. She was truly a model for the woman I wanted to become. God blessed the world with her and we are all better for knowing her.
You are in my prayers. Love, Julie
Dr Paul B Kernel says
Dear Bernie (and all the Shank family), I just received word of Gloria’s death. You “guys” are always in my thoughts and prayers and I won’t stop now. One thought I have is: How is HEAAVEN handling all those St. Thomas Women’s Club gals trying to re-organize and run the “show”. Englewood is not too far from Naples. Let’s do it. My love and prayers, Paul Kernel
